When it comes to looking for a job, Goldring arts journalism graduates will have an edge. While studying at Newhouse, they will have gained real-world experience through internships and through freelance professional publication and can enter the job market with a well-developed professional portfolio.

Internships are an important part of the Goldring journey, providing experience, published clips of your work, and often the path to full-time employment after graduation. Since New York City is only four hours away, Goldring arts journalists have the option to intern in the Big Apple during the spring semester. Over the past two years, students have interned at many prestigious publications and organizations such as such as: American Theatre Magazine, Architectural Record, ARTnew, Conde Nast Traveler, Interview Magazine, MovieMaker Magazine, Playbill, Surface Magazine,Symphony Magazine, the Film Society at Lincoln Center, the Paley Center, the New Museum and WNYC radio.

Other students choose an upstate internship. Local opportunities include: The Syracuse Post-Standard, Syracuse New Times, WAER Radio, Making Music Magazine, International Musician, The Utica Observer, Rochester Insider, and City, a Rochester alt-weekly.

The Goldring program is unique at Newhouse in having a career advisor dedicated to assisting Goldring arts journalism students. I will help you with your internship search, resumes and cover letters. You can make appointments with me to discuss career-related issues including career goals and job hunt strategies.

Goldring students will also reap the full benefits of the Newhouse Tina Press and David Rubin Career Development Center. Created in 1991, the CDC serves as a resource for Newhouse students and alumni. You can log on to the CDC databases, which include listings of national internships and almost 3,000 Newhouse alumni who have agreed to serve as contacts for students. In addition, you will have access to industry directories listing communications companies, trade publications which help you stay current on communications fields; up-to-date-information on training programs, fellowships and awards, and a listserv that posts media jobs often not advertised elsewhere. The CDC also provides regularly scheduled seminars each semester.

At Newhouse, we want you to be prepared for the real world. I'm here to help you, and I look forward to working with you.
