Michael Barnes is the arts and entertainment editor for the Austin American-Statesman in Austin, Texas. His primary responsibility is XL, the newspaper's weekly entertainment magazine. Barnes has written more than 5,000 articles on architecture, art, books, comedy, dance, movies, music, opera and theater for the American-Statesman and other publications. He is former chairman of the American Theatre Critics Association and works closely with the leadership of the Dance Critics Association, the International Association of Art Critics and the Music Critics Association of North America. Barnes earned his Ph.D. in theater history and criticism at the University of Texas at Austin and teaches arts journalism at universities in Central Texas. He has won numerous regional and national journalism awards, including the top writing award from the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association.
