Theo Cateforis

20th-century American popular music, jazz, and society

Theo Cateforis received his B.A. in Music from the State University of New York (Binghamton) in 1990 and the M.A. and Ph.D. in Music History from the State University of New York (Stony Brook) in 2000. Before coming to Syracuse in the fall of 2005, he taught at the College of William & Mary and Carleton College. Dr. Cateforis' research interests include American music, popular music studies and 20th-century art music. He has published articles on topics ranging from riot grrrls to math rock, and has delivered numerous papers at the annual meetings of the American Musicological Society, Society for American Music, Society for Ethnomusicology, Feminist Theory and Music, and the International Association for the Study of Popular Music. Dr. Cateforis is currently writing a book on "new wave" rock of the early 1980s.
