Craig MacDonald
Theater
Craig MacDonald has taught acting, scene study and mask for the actor in the Department of Drama at Syracuse University since 1997. An actor for more than 25 years, he has performed in more than 150 professional productions on dozens of stages from Off Broadway to regional theaters to regional tours across the country, as well as on camera for television and film, including both commercial and industrial work.
Professor MacDonald has directed and produced theater as well. He recently translated, adapted, and staged an 18th-century Danish comedy by Ludwig Holberg with his wife, Lisa Nymark. His first love is live performance, and he is currently developing an original piece for masks based on a classic work of American literature. He was trained at the Conservatory at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University (M.F.A.) under Bill Esper and Maggie Flanagan. His B.F.A. in acting and directing was earned at Ithaca College. He has also studied at the Warren Robertson Studio in New York and the DellArte School of Physical Comedy in Blue Lake, California.
Professor MacDonald is a master teacher of the Meisner system of exercises, and has developed a cycle of text analysis exercises for the stage to complement the Meisner series. Along with SU Drama Professor Elizabeth Ingram, he recently helped negotiate the program linking Syracuse University's drama department and the Department of International Programs Abroad with the Shakespeare Globe Theatre of Bankside, London. He is currently remounting his production of Becky Modes Fully Committed -- which played a sold out run last fall at Ithaca, New York's Kitchen Theater -- to play in repertory there for the summer.
